A recent study suggests that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing such medications need to be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
